Olympic minister of Britain: it is necessary to have universal legislation linked with sentencing of athletes that use steroids

Officials of the British government will be not capable to stop athletes importing steroids to the UK, when they come to take part in the 2012 Olympics. However application of steroids is prohibited in sports, personal usage of these medicines is not illegal in the UK. Just sale of steroids is considered to be illicit in this country. So, if a person desires to import amount of anabolic steroids which is evidentially large, he/she will not be allowed to do it.
Before Olympics took place in Australia, Canada and China, governments of these countries modified legislation linked with import and intake of steroids at least temporally. But the British government doesn’t agree to alter steroid laws for the 2012 Olympics.
Ironically, while the British government refuses to make personal administration of steroids criminal, Britain sportspeople are banned for lifetime, if they utilize anabolic steroids. When it comes to the WADA Code, sportspeople who use banned preparations are banned for 2 years.
Hugh Robertson, the Olympic minister, notes that it is important to have a universal policy linked with sentencing. He insists on at least four years or even longer.  However he is supported by the British Olympic Association, the UK Anti-Doping Agency doesn’t support such harsh punishment. The CEO of the UK Anti-Doping Agency Andi Parkinson considers that several sanctions should be softened.
The Olympic minister admits that there are various points of view in sports and it’s not well but he doesn’t ask the CEO of the UKAD to resign.
The spokesman for Hugh Robertson has announced that any sportsperson can have steroids in his/her luggage, when he/she comes to London. But the quantity of steroids should display that he/she has them only for personal intake. The spokesman has added that it is not illegal for a sportsperson to administer steroids under laws of the UK but if any sportsperson is caught administering prohibited preparations, he/she will be punished under anti-doping laws.
The UKAD noted that they would cooperate with border control officers. Information about athletes will be utilized by anti-doping agencies.
5, 000 drug tests will be conducted by the International Olympic Committee. 1, 000 of these tests will be blood tests.
