Tony Thompson, a boxer, claims that steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs should be legalized in boxing. The athlete claims that anti-doping laws and gun laws are similar. Who doesn’t break gun laws? Just good guys do it. That’s why good guys are at a disadvantage. So, the similar situation is linked with anti-doping laws. Just honest sportsmen don’t take steroids and/or other doping products. Thus, they fight with those who have increased their performance with the help of anabolic steroids and other related medicines.
It is stated that steroids are not permitted in sports because they are dangerous. What would you claim about boxing in itself? Isn’t boxing dangerous? The answer is evident.
But it is also stated that it is needed to ban steroids and other related medications in order to make boxing safer. Anabolic steroids and other doping products enhance performance. The more enhanced performance is, the more dangerous matches are. Although it is true, would you ban anything that promotes performance of boxers? Thus, you ban anabolic steroids because they enhance performance. Then ban workouts as well since they enhance performance too! Thus, you will reduce performance while reducing possible risks. What do you think about this condition?
Tony Thompson also adds that detection tests are not efficacious at all. While a lot of athletes use forbidden medications, only some of them are caught and suspended. So, dopers have unfair advantage over those that keep anti-doping rules. There is no fairness.
Undoubtedly, arguments provided by Tony Thompson are reasonable. Anti-doping laws make matches more unfair. Moreover, the ban of doping doesn’t make rounds safer. Numerous boxers continue to use steroids and/or other banned products without being detected. They continue to fight and succeed with the help of doping, while honest guys are at a disadvantage because they don’t break anti-doping rules.
Thus, if doping is allowed in boxing, matches will be more honest. Undoubtedly, they will remain unsafe. But they will be at least fair.
Tony Thompson has been harshly criticized for his statements pro legalization of doping in boxing.
